FAQs
Drawer or drum – where do I put it?
Despite us screaming at people to stick it up their drum, Eat Dirt goes in the detergent drawer, not straight on your clothes.
Pour it into your washing machine's dispenser and let it do its thing.
How much should I use per wash?
It depends how filthy your laundry is.
- A little dirty: 20ml
- A little more dirty: 40ml
- A lot dirty: 60ml
If you'd rather not eyeball it, the UNIT, our 40ml plastic-free doser, can help.
For really annoying stains, pre-soak with a bit of Eat Dirt before you wash.
Always follow your clothes' care labels and your washing machine's instructions.
How do I measure the right dosage of Eat Dirt?
The UNIT can help. It's our specially made detergent doser that lasts forever. Here's how much to measure, depending on how filthy your laundry is:
- A little dirty: half a UNIT (20ml)
- A little more dirty: a whole UNIT (40ml)
- A lot dirty: a UNIT and a half (60ml)
Measure it up, pour it in. (Just don't put the UNIT in the washing machine drum, for Pete's sake.)
Or you can use any other small measuring cup or cap (we even collated a few ideas). What's nice about ours is it's plastic-free.
How do I know how much 20/40/60ml is?
If in doubt, get yourself the UNIT. It's a specially made 40ml doser that lasts forever (no plastic).
Measure it up, pour it in. (Just don't put the UNIT in the washing machine drum, for Pete's sake.)
What temperature?
Eat Dirt works best at 30–40°C and as low as 20°C.
Do I need fabric conditioner/softener on top?
Honestly? No, we wanted to avoid the need for an additional step – fabric conditioners work by coating fibres to get that soft feeling, which can reduce absorbency over time (bad news for towels) and the ingredients aren't the kindest to waterways either. So we've poured everything into one product that we think cleans brilliantly, smells incredible and leaves clothes feeling genuinely soft without having to add more into the repertoire.
But does Eat Dirt get my clothes soft?
We love how soft our clothes feel washed with Eat Dirt (biased but true) – no fabric softener needed.
How you dry them matters too: cranking up the spin speed on lighter loads pulls more water out before drying, which makes a real difference to softness without adding extra products.
Can I hand wash with Eat Dirt?
Yep. Add a splash (10–20ml) to a sinkful of warm water (not hot – it can shrink your clothes). Soak for five minutes, gently massage the garments (oo-er), then rinse.
Can I use it on delicates?
Yes, but always check the garment care label first and use the right wash setting on your machine, or hand wash, depending on what it says.
What if I've got sensitive skin (or am a baby)?
No problemo. Eat Dirt's formulated to be kind to sensitive skin and gentle enough to wash baby clothes with.
What's in it?
Eat Dirt contains:
- Less than 15% non-ionic surfactants
- Less than 5% preservatives (phenoxyethanol)
- Fragrances linalool and limonene
Here's a full list of our ingredients:
| WHAT? | WHY? |
|---|---|
| DE-IONISED WATER | Purified water, keeping all the ingredients evenly dissolved |
| XANTHAN GUM | A plant-based thickener that keeps everything smoothly blended |
| PHENOXYETHANOL | A gentle preservative that stops Eat Dirt from going off |
| TETRASODIUM GLUTAMATE DIACETATE | A biodegradable stabiliser that keeps Eat Dirt working well in hard water |
| REACTION MASS OF 2-ETHYLHEXYLMONO-D-GLUCOPYRANOSIDE, 2-ETHYLHEXYL DI D-GLUCOPYRANOSIDE | A plant-based cleaning ingredient that helps water lift away dirt, grease and stains |
| CAPRYL/CAPRYLYL GLUCOSIDE | A plant-based cleaning ingredient that (also) helps water lift away dirt, grease and stains |
| LAURYL GLUCOSIDE | A plant-based cleaning ingredient that (you guessed it) helps water lift away dirt, grease and stains |
| DIPROPYLENE GLYCOL MONOMETHYL ETHER | A biodegradable solvent that removes stains, and helps xanthan gum do its job |
| POLYSORBATE 80 | A plant-based emulsifier that keeps the fragrance evenly blended |
| BLEND OF CITRUS OILS + AROMA COMPOUNDS | The fragrance mix featuring naturally-occurring linalool and limonene, delivering our signature Bitter Orange scent |
Is Eat Dirt vegan and cruelty free?
Yes and yes. The formula's cleaning ingredients are biodegradable and it doesn't contain any phosphates, phosphonates, parabens or dyes (a.k.a. harsh chemicals that can pollute rivers and soil).
The fragrance – a blend of natural citrus oils and some nature-identical synthetics – makes up just under 1% of the formula and is certified safe for use in laundry detergents. We're already working on a fully natural evolution.
Is Eat Dirt bio or non-bio?
Eat Dirt is non-bio, which means it's powered by plant chemistry. That makes it gentler on skin and delicate fabrics than bio detergents, which use enzymes.
Does Eat Dirt have palm oil in it?
No, but it does contain ingredients that may have originally been made using palm oil (although no palm oil makes it into the final product).
Do you have an unscented option?
Not yet. We've got big plans for new fragrance options, as well as a scent-free version.
How do I store Eat Dirt?
In a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight, somewhere kids can't get at it. Also known as a cupboard. Or a high shelf.
Why do you use tins instead of plastic bottles?
Metal is much easier to recycle than plastic (less energy- and resource-intensive). And when we say it's recyclable, we mean it's infinitely recyclable; so your little Eat Dirt tin could be reborn again and again and again forever and ever amen.
We do use a small amount of plastic in the lid of the tin. It's made from LDPE and HDPE, which are two of the easier plastics to recycle. But we're working on cutting out plastic altogether.
How do I recycle the tin?
When your tin's finished, rinse it out, unscrew the lid and chuck both in the recycling bin. Or repurpose your tin into something great (check out our Insta for some tinspiration 👀), just for the love of god don't use it for anything to do with eating or drinking.
Do you do refills?
Not yet, but it's part of the masterplan. Sign up to our newsletter to be the first to hear when we do.
What sizes does Eat Dirt come in?
Only 1L for now, but if there are other sizes you'd like to see, please let us know.
Why has my Eat Dirt arrived in a box from a different brand?
We often use second-hand boxes for deliveries as a way to keep waste down. So they might look a bit 'loved'. But don't worry – they're up to the job 💪.
Where can I buy Eat Dirt?
Right here, babyyy. We'll be in physical stores soon too – watch this space.
Where do you deliver?
Anywhere in mainland UK.
How much does delivery cost and how long does it take?
For tins - nada! P&P is included in the cost. You'll see delivery times at checkout where they get calculated automatically. For smaller one-off items there may be some additional P&P costs, which will always be clearly broken down at checkout before you order.
What if I want to return my order?
If something's faulty, damaged, or doesn't match the description, email us and we'll get it sorted.
If you've changed your mind, you have 30 days after your delivery arrives to let us know. As long as the tin's unopened and in perfect condition, we'll tell you how to return it for a full refund.
Can I get an Eat Dirt subscription?
Yes, absolutely! You can choose between 4, 6, 8 and 10 week deliveries, which can be paused, cancelled, reschedule however and whenever you like.
